A place for making, learning and experimentation, with a history in clay stretching back more than 2,000 years.

Set at Blackmore Farm in Oxfordshire, Blackmore Studio is the home of Emma Louise Payne Studios and a working centre for contemporary ceramics.

The story of making here began long before the studio existed. Archaeological evidence has identified an Iron Age settlement on the site, including evidence of pottery production, meaning that clay has been worked and fired on this land for over 2,000 years.

Today, that connection continues through Emma Louise Payne’s ceramic practice which has been based on the farm since 2010.

Yard Studio is Emma’s production pottery, where her collections and commissions are made. Orchard Studio, her first studio on the site, has since been outgrown and transformed into a dedicated teaching space for classes and workshops.

Here, we invite people to experience the process of making with clay, from first encounters with hand building and throwing to more considered workshops exploring particular techniques, materials and forms. Classes are relaxed, practical and designed to make ceramics accessible, whether you are completely new to clay or looking to develop your skills.

And the studio is still evolving. A new soda kiln is currently in development with Alice Wakefiled, opening up opportunities to explore atmospheric firing and more experimental approaches to glaze and surface. The first experimental firings are planned for summer 2027.

Blackmore Studio is a working pottery with an ancient connection to clay, a place where Emma’s practice, teaching and experimentation come together.

Private Classes

Bespoke classes designed for individuals, friends, and teams seeking a creative, hands-on experience. Learn to throw on the wheel in small groups of up to 10, with focused guidance in a relaxed, inspiring setting. For larger gatherings, hand-building sessions accommodate up to 30 people, making them ideal for corporate events, celebrations, or team away days. Sessions are tailored to all abilities, from complete beginners to those refining their skills. Expect expert tuition, high-quality materials, and a welcoming atmosphere that encourages experimentation, connection, and a lasting appreciation for the craft of ceramics.

Regular Classes

Discover ceramics at Blackmore Studio through wheel throwing and hand building. Day sessions offer a gentle introduction to the wheel alongside hand building and sculpting techniques, perfect for beginners. Our 6-week evening courses provide a slower, more in-depth approach, allowing skills and confidence to grow over time.

Whether you’re trying something new or deepening your practice, the studio offers a calm, welcoming space to make by hand. No experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to explore clay.
