About me …
Emma Louise Payne is a distinguished ceramicist based in the Oxfordshire countryside. Since establishing her studio in 2017, she has collaborated with renowned architects and brands. Her work is celebrated for its innovative approach to ceramics, pushing the boundaries of material and design.
Although based in her Oxfordshire studio, Emma maintains strong ties to London through Atelier 76, where she holds annual exhibitions. Her London Plane tableware, inspired by the city’s iconic trees, and her founding of County Hall Pottery reflect her enduring commitment to London’s ceramic culture.
Emma honed her craft through extensive international experience. She obtained an MA in Ceramic Design at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, where she explored the full potential of ceramics. She also spent time in Norway, China, and Denmark, expanding her global ceramic network through residencies. Her work is not only technically accomplished but also deeply rooted in material exploration, often transforming architectural environments with her creations.
Her practice embraces imperfection, celebrating the unpredictability of the handmade process. She uses a range of techniques in the studio, throwing, slab building and slipcasting to maintain structural consistency. However it is often her use of unique glazes that ensure each piece has its own character. Emma’s artistic philosophy values individuality over uniformity, highlighting the raw beauty of her materials.
In 2023, Emma launched her own homeware range, London Plane, inspired by London’s iconic Plane trees. The collection, featuring dinnerware plates, elegantly curved candle holders, and delicate vases, is now stocked in Heals. In 2024 she partnered with Gather Glass to create Meld, a collection of sculptural mirrors and lights that blend ceramic-glazed stoneware with hand-blown glass. To bridge the gap between her rural studio and city clientele, she is set to open her own atelier in West London this spring.
One of her most significant projects to date was with Birch Hotel in Cheshunt. Over the course of a year, she designed and created more than 1,200 bespoke objects, including coathooks, pendant lights, beer taps, bowls, and vases. Additionally, she set up an on-site pottery studio, allowing guests to engage with ceramics through hands-on classes. This project exemplified her ability to merge craftsmanship with large-scale interior design, working alongside her long-term collaborators, Red Deer architects.
Emma currently serves as the Creative Director at County Hall Pottery, a groundbreaking initiative that has transformed London’s historic County Hall into a dynamic ceramics destination. Funded by County Hall Arts the organisation offers rotating exhibitions, pop-up markets, community engagement initiatives, and a ‘potter in residence’ program. Through this platform, Emma is dedicated to fostering a vibrant ceramic culture in London.
A lifelong animal lover and vegetarian, Emma grew up on a small farm near Henley-on-Thames. Her rural surroundings continue to inspire her practice, with her studio nestled among apple trees just an hour outside London. As she expands her creative footprint with new projects and collaborations, Emma remains committed to innovation, craftsmanship, and the evolving artistry of ceramics.
